Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to contest particular calls from the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
