They're Doing in America What They Executed within Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and defining occasions – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his designs for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of fatalities from his cuts to international aid amounts to 600,000 and growing, and this week an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom have business with the government.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the Earth' to 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, however it is still unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness of him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is emphatically not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to escape secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his teaching focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if someone steals your coat you ought to provide him your sweater too.

The evident and direct reality that Christ from scripture calls for a type of radical love focused on the poor has perpetually caused Christianity something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be contained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Highest Among Us

So I have been inspired to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to turn out in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and calls to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, by reference to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is most protected by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and beautiful, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it imply feigning the most negative of both America and Christianity never occurred; it represents both meekness and faith, a combination that committed national faithful should embrace.
