Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a significant honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
