Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
