EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts point out that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
