Comeback Medvedev Secures First Trophy in 882 Days

19 of the Russian's 21 championships have been earned on hard surfaces

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev claimed his maiden trophy for over two years with victory over Frenchman Moutet in the competition championship match.

The Russian, a former top-ranked player, has had a challenging period, achieving just one match at the big events and suffering a difficult moment at the American major.

His inconsistency on the professional circuit - and struggles with his serve in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the elite rankings and finally splitting with long-time mentor Gilles Cervara.

Now collaborating with Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has steadily improved in the past month - culminating in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over challenger Corentin Moutet.

It is Medvedev's maiden championship since the Rome competition and initial on a hardcourt since that period of the previous year.

Success also indicates the Russian has secured 21 titles at twenty-one different tournaments.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my children at once, so to get a title is really nice," stated ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

"This title is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I won when my child Alisa was born was for her."

The athlete, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six finals, including in the German tournament in the past months.

Medvedev's retrieving strategy and recurring reactions on the tennis court had prompted commentators to question if his capacity to compete at the top level was over.

But the athlete has implemented adjustments in the past month, striving to approach the net and compete positively, reinforced by an enhanced serve.

Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the tricky Frenchman, securing 4 of the concluding five games to go ahead.

Both players swapped breaks in the middle set before the challenger, attempting for his first tour victory, took control to push for a third set.

The opponent rescued four initial opportunities in a tight deciding set before Medvedev broke to that score to close out the victory.

Appropriately, he secured the win with a rally at the net, with Moutet incapable to manage a shot after a lengthy match.
