RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.
The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.
British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."
In December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
