Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
