2K Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Change Follows Mixed Reception

The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last fall.

Recently, the company's top executive a key figure informed employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the requirement for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer noted that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

The news mirrors a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the complete text from Ismailer's memo:

I understand you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and creative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”

With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a clearer brand.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our fans.

Our confidence in this project grows every day. To advance the incredible progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome the new hire as the latest Studio Head of the team. After several months of conversations, he comes aboard us on next week.

Ben’s management and background in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having devoted the past decade and a half developing and leading some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming Ben next week. We are all looking forward to continue observing the progress of the game in the months to follow.

Experience of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in various development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was revealed in last year together with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Face the rivals with new abilities, challenges, and tests that evolve every session. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and hope your squad can secure victory? The option is up to you."

The game does not have an official debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can anticipate additional details as creation continues.
